2022 VJLAP Volunteer Symposium
May 20, 2022 - May 22, 2022
FreeThe 1st Annual George H. Hettrick
Virginia Judges and Lawyers Volunteer Symposium
May 20-22, 2022
South 24 Hotel; Staunton, Virginia
VJLAP invites all current and interested VJLAP volunteers to join us for the 2022 Volunteer Retreat on May 20-22, 2022 at South 24 Hotel (formerly the Stonewall Jackson Hotel) in Staunton, Virginia.
Background:
Volunteers are the backbone of VJLAP’s strength and outreach efforts. Volunteers monitor individuals participating in Rehabilitation and Monitoring Agreements; present at CLEs and other presentations; serve as mentors for individuals experiencing practice, personal, and transitional difficulties; and assist with retreat and other event planning. In past years, VJLAP has held volunteer trainings through a two-day conference. More recently, due to staffing and funding limitations, this training has been a one- or two-hour session after the full Annual Retreat. Even this abbreviated training has not been held since 2019.
Our volunteers are growing in numbers and are joining us from across the state. In celebration of our volunteers and to bolster our volunteer-network, VJLAP is in the process of restarting routine, volunteer trainings and is planning a volunteer retreat for May 20-22, 2022, in Staunton, Virginia. During the Retreat volunteers will receive an orientation on VJLAP’s mission, purpose, structure, and services; presentations on the risks within and wellness of the legal profession; and training on the skills necessary for the assessment of and safe intervention with individuals who may be experiencing a mental health crisis. VJLAP’s Deputy Clinical Director has been certified as a trainer in Mental Health First Aid and will provide participants the opportunity complete the full course.
The George H. Hettrick Virginia Judges and Lawyers Volunteer Symposium:
This training has been named The George H. Hettrick VJLAP Annual Volunteer Training Symposium in honor of George Harrison Hettrick, a life-long public servant, a former VJLAP Board Member, and ever-lasting friend to VJLAP who passed away in November 2021. In his obituary, his family requested donations in his memory be made to VJLAP. These donations will be placed in the newly created George H. Hettrick Memorial Fund and will be used to offset the costs of hosting the Volunteer Symposium.
