Summary:
This session covers the importance of professionalism, diligence, and competence in the legal profession. It provides an update from recent Virginia State Bar ethics opinions and case matters governing (i) communication; (ii) online solicitation and criticism; (iii) communications with represented government officials; (iv) discriminatory statements by actions of lawyers; and (v) inadvertent receipt of confidential information. It further reviews the intersection of competence, mental health and substance use concerns, and lawyer discipline.
Presenter Bio:
Jeffrey Hamilton Geiger, Esq., Sands Anderson, PC: Jeff Geiger serves as Firm Counsel and on the Board of Directors. Jeff served as the firm’s Litigation Group Leader for over a decade prior to being elected to the Board by his fellow shareholders in 2018. Jeff concentrates his practice on (i) Legal Malpractice Defense/Legal Ethics Discipline; (ii) Eminent Domain/ Litigation; (iii) Business Litigation; and (iv) Intellectual Property.
Virginia Business magazine has listed Jeff as being among the Virginia Business Legal Elite, as selected by his peers, since 2005. In addition, Jeff has been listed among Virginia’s Super Lawyers® and was named in 2013 a “Leader in the Law” by Virginia Lawyers Weekly.
Jeff received his undergraduate and juris doctorate degrees from the College of William and Mary. He has served as lead counsel and local counsel in dozens of trials in state and federal courts, appellate courts and administrative agencies.
