The Virginia Judges and Lawyers Assistance Program (VJLAP, formerly Lawyers Helping Lawyers) and our partners are excited to bring the 16th Annual VJLAP Retreat (Retreat) to Virginia’s legal community, online and free of charge. Rates of addiction, anxiety, depression, substance use disorders, burnout, and suicide are higher in the legal profession due to its unique occupational risks and stressors. Lawyers are two times more likely to have problems with substance use, and one-third of lawyers suffer from a mental health crisis at some point in their careers. These problems, when unaddressed, can impact an attorney’s competence and could result in violations of an attorney’s ethical obligations.
VJLAP supports prevention, awareness, and early intervention and, should a problem arise, connects clients to resources available to address and manage. Connection is a key to recovery and the shared experience of the retreat seeks to promote that. The Retreat’s six sessions are designed to educate participants about, improve the understanding regarding, address the impact of, and review the responses available to address the acute risks within the legal profession of experiencing concerns related to mental health or substance use disorders.
